What is the Procession of the Crucifix?
Piegaro pays homage to the Holy Crucifix preserved in the parish church of San Silvestro Papa. The procession of the Holy Crucifix takes place on May 11 of each year to remember the miraculous event that happened back in 1738.
A certain Father Paolo della Croce, a priest of the Monte Argentario retreat, on that day, left Piegaro after a few days of preaching, because he considered his mission a failure. But as he was leaving the village he received news that the Holy Crucifix had exuded blood.
The Church of San Silvestro Papa, patron saint of Piegaro, seat of today’s parish, preserves in one of the side chapels, the miraculous Crucifix, dating back to the seventeenth century.
Highly venerated by the people of Piegaresi, every year it is carried in procession to the point, just outside the historic center, where Paolo was stopped and accompanied back to the Church.
This feast is very heartfelt and many devotees entrust their prayers to the miraculous Crucifix.
At the end of the procession, the citizens usually celebrate the event in the Town Hall with refreshments made by the Piegaresi themselves.

By car: - From the north: Motorway A1 exit Bettole, proceed in the direction of Castiglione del Lago and then in the direction of Piegaro - From the south: Motorway A1 exit Fabro proceed in the direction of Chiusi and then in the direction of Piegaro By train: The nearest stations to Piegaro are Chiusi (SI) and Terontola - Cortona (PG) both about 10 – 15 minutes away. From the stations it is necessary to take a taxi. By plane: The nearest airport to Piegaro is Perugia's San Francesco Airport. From here you can rent a car. The time to reach the village is about an hour.
