Calendimaggio is a festival with a strong identity value for the Assisi community: it unites the partaioli (the two parts into which the city is divided) of the Nobilissima Parte de Sopra and the Magnifica Parte de Sotto, drawing them from different parts of the world despite the distance. Many Assisans return specifically to participate in the festival, to experience its magical and ritual moments. Maybe you knew some of them through the story of a grandparent or uncle taking part in the party before leaving Umbria!
During these days Assisi relives the atmosphere of the typical medieval feast: the Assisans of the Nobilissima parte de sopra and the Magnifica parte de sotto dress in traditional medieval clothes to carry out the partisan Scenes and the two Parades of the day and evening, the singing competition, the moments of the challenge that determine the final verdict and the awarding of the Palio.
If you visit Assisi with us during the Calendimaggio, you can witness the “Blessing of the Vessels,” and see the Basilica of St. Francis or the Cathedral of St. Rufino, populated by the costumed figures of the two sides or participate in the election of Madonna Primavera. Are you ready to experience the magic of the Middle Ages in Assisi?
