What is the Feast of Corpus Christi?

To experience the feast of Corpus Christi in Orvieto is to immerse oneself in the rituals of a historically significant holiday for the Orvieto community, representing the spirit, tradition, and social, political and military aspects of Orvieto’s powerful medieval commune.

The Historical Procession and the Ladies’ Procession represent a “social cross-section” of medieval Orvieto, providing an insight into the noble families who built the elegant palaces, towers and castles in the Orvieto area: the Guelph Monaldeschi and the rival Filippeschi, Ghibellines; the Alberici, Della Terza and Della Greca families, who built the Palazzo del Popolo.

During the visit with our guide you will learn about the history of the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena that took place in 1263 and the sacred linen stained by the blood of Christ, and you will understand the historical-religious value of the event awaited every year by the Community. Have you already heard about it from the stories of your grandparents or great-grandparents?
