A celebration of women’s courage in Scheggino

The exhibition was created with the intention of remembering a historical event that really took place in 1522.

It was July 23rd, while the men were in the mountains intent on working in the woods and harvesting, Scheggino was besieged by a punitive expedition organized by the neighboring municipalities. The defense was supported only by the women, who lashed out at the attackers by any means and even throwing the pots, over the stones. They were thus able to repel the attacks of the besiegers and save the town.

In the year 2024, the celebrations include a theatrical-style re-enactment, with a dynamic staging along the streets of the historic village. In fact, the audience will be called to move to the various corners where small representations will evoke the main story. From the bivouac of the brigands on the riverbank, the brigands who descend along the Nera with a makeshift boat to lurk along the walls, the women who run to take refuge in the battlements and then find makeshift weapons to repel the aggressors, a victory made overwhelming by the feat of the women and the resistance of the stone walls.

Like a film that is played in front of the spectators, it will be the first year of traveling theater. Even if not local, you can participate as extras, by contacting the local association that is organizing the re-enactment. The next day, in addition to theatrical performances and small concerts in the various places of the event, as well as the now consolidated market of typical and handicraft products, “The Parade of Time” will take place.

Hairstyles and styles from 1500 to today, accompanied by the parish choir of Scheggino, which will reproduce Renaissance and Baroque music. A presenter will make us fully enter time, with small gems from the history of costume, curiosities and famous women who have made history.
