The land of love on Valentine’s Day

Umbria is the most central region in our country, which is why it is called the green heart of Italy, thanks to the nature that dominates it. But there is also another reason that makes the Region the perfect place to rediscover the roots of love in February on the occasion of Lovers’ Day.

The green heart of Italy was the birthplace of St. Valentine himself, protector of hearts in love!

A native of Terni, St. Valentine is a Christian saint and martyr venerated by Catholics, Orthodox and Anglicans, Bishop and patron saint of Terni, here you can visit the cathedral where he not only celebrated but married young lovers fleeing their families to escape hostile fates and marriages of convenience.

According to one legend it was he who married the pagan legionary Sabinus to the beautiful Christian Serapia at the point of death, a love that overcame many obstacles but united them forever. Instead, the legend of the Rose of Reconciliation, which the saint offered to two quarreling fiancés, gave rise to the Feb. 14 anniversary of his death. On this day in Terni each year there are many couples in love who entrust their thoughts of love to the saint who protects and guides them.

In the surroundings of the city of the saint of lovers, you can not fail to stop at a special place, the Marmore Falls, in the heart of the beautiful Valnerina. 165 meters high divided into three jumps, they are among the highest in Europe and certainly among the most famous in Italy: an unforgettable view, perfect for a romantic weekend, especially from the small window known as the belvedere known as ‘of the lovers, whose legendary origin is still linked to Valentine’s Day.

The sweetest chocolates

What better gift than a kiss on this romantic journey? From Terni, a key stop is the provincial capital Perugia, the land of chocolate and sweetness. The Bacio Perugino was born at the hands of chocolatier Luisa Spagnoli, the daughter of a long line of chocolatiers who had founded the Perugina company.

Perugina, founded in 1907, began producing a series of chocolates from the waste materials from the processing of other sweets (particularly hazelnuts in grains or chunks and chocolate). Because of the shape, they thought of calling them Cazzotti, an unsuitable name today for the sweet declaration of love. In fact, the name was due to its origin: the chocolate was obtained by combining various scraps from the processing of other chocolate Fortunately, in 1922 Giovanni Buitoni sensed the potential of the creation and renamed Baci, these sweet creations to convey an unmistakable message of love.
