The experience

The experience in Valnerina

The Umbrian Valnerina is the most intact and genuinely preserved area, in reference to the traditions and appearance of the past, of the entire Umbrian region. With its great abundance of forests and natural spaces, abundance of water and persistence of villages not devastated by industrialization, it allows one to have an experience suspended in a fairy tale time, with the possibility of being able to make a true emotional connection with one’s origins.

But in just a few days we want to give you a taste of this area so named because it originated from the route of the Nera River. It offers many perched or low-lying towns and villages, but all historically protected by city walls or towers, show some evidence of these fortifications and protections. We chose to take you to Vallo di Nera because it preserves the medieval urban structure intact and the stone houses, surrounded by walls and towers, are visible.

We then want to take you to Rasiglia, the village of streams. Mills, canals, a pool the size of a square, form an open-air museum, and the characteristic swish of water accompanies you constantly among the stone houses.

Black Wall

Morning

Vallo di Nera is an Italian town of 335 inhabitants located on a hill in the opening of the Valnerina, the valley of the Nera River. For its valuable historical and scenic features, it has received numerous awards. It is one of I borghi più belli d’Italia, Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club, Bee Friendly Municipality and Truffle City. A true village-monument: the stone houses are surrounded by walls and towers, and it preserves its medieval urban structure intact, with narrow alleys topped by arches. Among the most valuable buildings is the ancient parish church of Santa Maria, which is rich in ancient frescoes that tell the story of the community between the Middle Ages and the 17th century. You will visit the House of Tales, the heart of research and documentation on the oral tradition of the Valnerina to discover a veritable anthology of popular culture, its rituals, rhythms and values in the wonderful wooden structure, a veritable closet of memory animated by storytellers who will tell of a land full of traditions and crafts.

If the trip takes place in June, you will be able to find the “Fior di Cacio” event, dedicated to food goods from local producers and typical handicraft creations from the area.

Address: Piazza San Giovanni, 1, Vallo di Nera (PG)

Discovering the delights of the Pastures of the Valnerina

Afternoon

At lunchtime, you will taste typical Valnerina dairy products at a local farm, such as pecorino and ricotta salata, made by farmers who process only their own milk, raising their flocks on Valnerina pastures throughout the year. After the tasting, you will visit Scheggino, a small village overlooking the banks of the Nera River.

Sant'Anatolia di Narco

Morning

The Hemp Museum in Sant’Anatolia di Narco is a place of encounter, exchange of practices and transmission of skills, where the textile project, the centerpiece of the educational experience, builds opportunities for dialogue between institutions, new generations of museum professionals, tradition holders and apprentice weavers.

Through practice and reflection on weaving, it produces paths for creative reworking of heritage, experiments with landscape forms related to the hemp cycle, and encourages new techniques and technologies.

After the guided tour you will participate in a workshop dedicated to the many uses of this crop that the community continues to hand down.

Sant'Anatolia di Narco

Afternoon

In the Urban Trekking you will discover the churches and castles Sant’Anatolia di Narco: from the castle of Caso you will reach the Piano delle Melette. During the guided tour to the Church of Our Lady of Grace, St. Christina Church you will learn about the area through curiosities, stories, fairy tales and tales of tradition.

Address: Old Town Square, 1 06040 – Sant’Anatolia di Narco (PG)

Rasiglia and the waters

Morning

You will visit Rasiglia, the “village on the water.” This town, rediscovered by tourism only in recent years, retains the typical characteristics of the medieval village by gathering in an amphitheater-like structure. It is full of crossings, among the streets of the place, of its springs: walking through the charming alleys of the center, it is impossible not to be enchanted by the streams of water that run through the town, making it unique and fascinating, like a small nativity scene.

Address: Rasiglia (PG)
