The Cart Race is a race with rudimentary vehicles without a braking system through the steep streets of the village of Paciano, during which daring and courageous pilots challenge each other at full speed.
For the public, the Paciano Cart Race is a truly exciting show and the participation is always remarkable.
There are those who say that the ball-bearing carts were an ironic and playful response to the “Sundays on foot, following the oil crisis of the 70s.
In many villages, fun vehicles began to be built with wooden planks and recycled bearings with which to take advantage of the descents and paved roads of the suburbs and the countryside.
In Paciano, this practice has turned into a real competition and then into an indispensable tradition.
The event concludes with the “Descent to the beast”, in which all the participants descend together, even in two per cart, carrying torches, flags and various fairings, showing the true, somewhat crazy, nature of the Paciano cart race.
The first Paciano Cart Race took place in 1975 and since then the associations have taken charge of its organization.
To date, the race is organized by the Congregation of the Muscular Youth Deserter of the Pedal Spade which has been taking care of every edition since the 90s.

How to get there
By car: - From the north: From the A1 motorway, exit at the Valdichiana tollbooth, continue taking the Siena-Perugia highway, exit at Castiglione del Lago. Continue towards Chiusi on the state road, until the Paciano exit. Follow the road and the signs to the historic center. - From the south: From the A1 motorway, exit at the Chiusi-Chianciano tollbooth, continue towards Chiusi and follow the signs for Castiglione del Lago. After passing the hamlets of Po'Bandino and Moiano on the state road, exit at Paciano and follow the road and the signs to the historic center. By train: The nearest stations to Paciano are Chiusi (SI) and Castiglione del Lago (PG) both about 10 minutes away. From the stations you need to take a taxi (Chiusi) or call it (Castiglione del Lago) By plane: The nearest airport to Paciano is the San Francesco airport in Perugia. From here you can rent a car. The time to reach the village is about an hour.
